Through funding gained from the National Research Foundation of South Africa (NRF) / Academy of Finland (AF) Science and Technology Research Collaboration, the “Bridging North to South” project will be performed as a collaboration between the Department of Material Science and Engineering at Aalto University, Finland, and the Centre for Minerals Research at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. The project aims to outline research protocols for evaluation and implementation of closed water circuits in mineral concentrators, to achieve zero emission plants.

In April 2016, Dr Kirsten Corin visited Aalto University to start collaborative research discussions with Dr Nora Schreithofer, during which time they also spent some time 150 km inside the Arctic Circle at Kevitsa mine. Ishmael Muzinda, PhD candidate at Aalto University and also of Kevitsa mine visited the CMR in June as part of this program to share his plans for his PhD work and give an overview of the importance of water within Kevitsa.
