UCT in the top 10 in the world in mining and mineral engineering

The recently released ShanghaiRanking’s Global Rankings of Academic Subjects(GRAS) 2017 has placed UCT in the top 50 in two academic subjects: mining and mineral engineering (8th) and public health (40th). A further two were in the top 100: geography and ecology. Read More on UCT News

Western Cape takes top learner place in Minquiz 2017

The Department of Chemical Engineering was the proud host of the Western Cape provincial round of Minquiz 2017. The Western Cape Provincial organizer Dr Kirsten Corin was ably assisted by an eager team of post-grad volunteers to create a very enjoyable event. The National competition took place 18-19 July 2017 at Mintek Head Office in Randburg. The Western Cape team comprised of learners from SACS, Somerset College, Monument Park and Protea Heights Academy, accompanied by the provincial organizer, Dr Kirsten Corin.

Mali IMWA 2017
Mali wins 2nd place student presentation at IMWA 2017

PhD student Malibongwe Manono was awarded 2nd place for his presentation at IMWA 2017. His paper involving the potential for recycling of water within minerals processing was very well received and sparked some good conversation from colleagues across the globe.

Process Mineralogy Book Launch

Last week saw the Cape Town celebrations of the launch of Process Mineralogy - the latest in the JKMRC Monograph Series in Mining and Mineral Processing. Dr Megan Becker of the CMR, and Drs Elaine Wightman and Cathy Evans of the SMI-JKMRC are the Editors of this seminal text. Process Mineralogy is the culmination of many months of work, by a team of over 50 contributors. The Monograph covers the various tools and techniques used in process mineralogy studies, and their application illustrated in a series of case studies spanning different commodities, unit processes and locations around the world.
