Trip to BGRIMM

30 May 2013 - 10:45

As part of a three year collaborative research venture in minerals processing (2012 – 2014) between Beijing General Research Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (BGRIMM) (, UCT and the University of Limpopo (UL), Professor Cyril O’Connor and Mrs Jenny Wiese from the CMR visited Beijing to participate in the 2nd Workshop on this project. This workshop took place from 15 – 18 April 2013.

This collaborative project addresses generic areas of research relating to fundamental and applied studies on the processing of platinum group minerals and complex sulphide ores by flotation. The first Workshop was held in Cape Town in February 2012. The first day of the Workshop consisted of feedback on the three major projects which form part of the collaboration by researchers from all three institutions. On the second day the attendants were hosted to a tour of the impressive new research facilities at BGRIMM followed by a set of business meetings. The third day was dedicated to a joint symposium on minerals processing which included presentations from BGRIMM and the South African participants on areas of research outside of the scope of the current collaborative venture. The research conducted by the two South African universities as part of the collaboration is sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology (DST). Also participating in the workshop were Professor Puthi Ngoepe from the University of Limpopo, who is world renowned for his seminal research in molecular modelling of interactions between collectors and mineral surfaces, and Mr Llanley Simpson, Director of Mining and Mineral Beneficiation at the South African Department of Science and Technology.
